When Progress Leaves People Behind | SriJeevanam

Sustainable handmade products by SriJeevanam a conscious choice in the age of AI

A video surfaced on my timeline few days back and It was quite unsettling for me.

A company in India had given Meta glasses to its workers not to help them do their jobs better, but to track their every movement. The data would eventually be used to replace them with bots. Employees were distressed but they didn’t had any choice. One of them was even crying as they know they are digging their own grave.

I sat with that for a long time.

I understand the argument. Productivity goes up. Profits go up. Shareholders are happy. On paper, it makes perfect sense

But I kept thinking about the person wearing those glasses. what they will do? how their families would survive? What would their children do when school fees are due?

We are number one in terms of population and that’s our greatest strength, a billion people with hands. It is not a liability for sure. Our people are our asset which no Bot can replicate.

When we replace people not because we have to, but because we can we are not innovating. We are abandoning, we are being selfish, we are not giving back to community and country.

And here’s what worries me most: we are creating a generation of people with no economic footing, no dignity of work, and no path forward. what you think they will turn to? History has never been kind to that outcome. Disparity at that scale would definitely going to come back and affect us as an Individual and as a Business. We won’t be in peace either with heaps of profits.

Here I am not questioning technology and not saying one should not adapt Technology but rather rationalizing its Its usage. Technology is for betterment but what matters most is the intention and conscience behind it.

The question we all need to ask as business owners, as decision-makers, as humans is not “Can we automate this?” but “Should we? And if we do, what do we owe the people we displace?”

At SriJeevanam we are fully conscious about it. we are engaging with and empowering real Humans and bringing real Impact. When you chose to gift SriJeevanam’s product or Hamper, you are not just giving something beautiful but helping a family thrive.

Every product we make is made by hand by women artisans from U.P who have turned their craft into a livelihood. We could automate parts of it. We choose not to. Because the hand that makes something is not inefficiency it is the entire point.

That is what conscious business looks like to us.
